Canada Concludes Junior Pan Pacific Championships with seven medals

KIHEI, Hawaii – The Junior Pan Pacific swimming championships concluded Monday with the men’s and women’s 10 kilometre water races and Canada’s medal count remained at seven for the five-day competition.

In the men’s 10 kilometre, George O’Brien of Australia won the gold medal in one hour and 50 minutes and 59.12 seconds. Yohe Takiguchi of Japan was second in 1:53:24.00 and Christian Ashwood of Australia was third in 1:53:28.69.

Zac Parkes of Victoria was seventh clocking 1:56:08.26.

In the women’s 10 kilometre, Tristin Baxter led the U.S., to a 1-2 finish clocking 1:58:42.77. Damari Iriondo was second in 2:01:35.60 and Haruna Ota of Japan third in 2:03:16.67.

Beatrice Pineau of Quebec City was 12th, Karyn Jewell of Orleans, Ont., 13th and Caitlin Hodge of Toronto 14th.

Canada ends the competition with three silver and four bronze.

“This was a terrific meet for our development program,” said Canadian national junior coach Ken McKinnon. “We had eight coaches and 44 swimmers that received a great experience. This was a very fast meet and we were pleased with our performances. While it didn’t always translate into medals we could definitely see the progress.”

The silver medallists were: Tera Van Beilen of Oakville, Ont., in the 100 breaststroke, the women’s 4X200 freestyle relay with Lindsay Delmar of Calgary, Lauren Earp of Toronto, Alyson Ackman of Pointe-Claire, Que., and Brittany MacLean of Etobicoke, Ont., and the women’s 4X100 freestyle relay with Sandrine Mainville of Boucherville, Que., Chantal Van Landeghem of Winnipeg, Earp and Fionnuala Pierse of Edmonton.

The bronze medallists were Van Beilen in the 200 breaststroke, Van Landeghem in the 50 freestyle, the women’s 4X100 medley relay with Van Landeghem, Van Beilen, Noemie Thomas of Vancouver and Mainville and the men’s 4X100 freestyle relay with Matthew Grillo of Pointe-Claire, Kyle Troskot of Lethbridge, Alta., Eric Anderson of Calgary and Jeremy Bagshaw of Victoria.
