SASKATOON- Chantal Vanlandeghem of Winnipeg won four gold medals on Friday at the Speedo Western Nationals swimming competition being held this week at the Shaw Centre.
Competing in the 15 and under age group, Vanlandeghem posted victories in the 50 butterfly, 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke and anchored Manta’s Swim Club to victory in the 4X100 freestyle relay with Emily Doucette, Jessica Plant and Renee Deschenes.
Her time of 58.73 in the 100 backstroke was a personal best.
“The 100 backstroke win is the one that stands out for me tonight,” said Vanlandeghem, “I really wasn’t expecting to get a best time in that. I’m just really happy with it overall. I kept focused on my race plan and didn’t hold back so much at the start of my race.”
In the same age group, Mariya Chekanovych of Burnaby, B.C., won the 200 breaststroke and Katie Caldwell of Surrey, B.C., was first in the 400 indvidual medley.
In the 16 and over age group, the winners included Lindsay Delmar of Calgary in the 50 butterfly, Sarah Sumner of Calgary in the 50 freestyle, Plant in the 100 backstroke and Tianna Rissling of Medicine Hat, Alta., in the 200 breaststroke.
In the men’s 16 and under class, Luke Peddie of Edmonton posted victories in the 50 butterfly and 50 freestyle while Joe Byram of Vernon, B.C., was first in the 100 backstroke, Nick Kostiuk of Edmonton won the 200 breaststroke and Alec Page of Victoria did the same in the 400 IM.
The winners in men’s 17 and over were Chris Manning of Brantford, Ont., in the 50 butterfly and 50 freestyle, Braeden Newton of Edmonton in the 100 backstroke, Sean Nugent of Burnaby, B.C., in the 200 breaststroke and Chad Bobrosky of Calgary, Thursday’s 800 freestyle winner, in the 400 IM.
Competition continues through to Sunday at the Shaw Centre. Preliminaries are at 9 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
